After choosing a new primary health care physician and undergoing two visits along with exhaustive lab tests, a 44 year old woman went to hear her doctor’s diagnosis.
The doctor told her she was doing “fairly well for her age”.

Being a little concerned about that comment, she nervously asked him, “ So do you think I will live to be 80 then?”

The doctor asked, “Do you ever socially drink with friends or have a glass of wine sometimes just to relax?”
“Never,” she replied. I never pollute my body with either of those things.”

The doctor then asked, ”Do you like to eat tasty foods, like cakes, barbecued meats, or other delicious dishes?
She responded, “No, my old doctor said, that rich, red and barbecued foods are very unhealthy! I pretty much just eat very simple and plain foods.”

Curiously, he then asked, “Well, then, do you ever spend time at the beach sunbathing or playing sports?”
“No, I don’t. I heard that the sun is bad for the skin, and so I pretty much stay out of the sun.”

He then asked, “Do you like to party with friends or like to have sex frequently?”
“No,” she said. I don’t do any of those things. I mostly work and I like to stay at home and watch movies and rest.”

The doctor looked at her sternly and said, “Then why do you give a damn if you live to be 80 years old?
You are obviously not enjoying your life now, so why should you worry about how long you will live?”

The Story

At 32 years old, Gilbert was educated, had a home and a husband, and a successful career as a writer. However, she was not happy; she was depressed with her marriage, often spending the night crying on her bathroom floor. She divorced her husband and entered into a relationship with another man, but this relationship did not work out either. She decided that she needed a change. She spent the next year traveling the world. She spent four months in Italy, eating and enjoying life (Eat). She spent four months in India, trying to find her spirituality (Pray). She ended the year in Bali, Indonesia, looking for “balance” of the two, and love (Love).

Gilbert paid for the trip with an advance she received on a book she planned to write.

The official start is in August!
